Begun in 1897, American automaker Oldsmobile made over 35 million vehicles until it became defunct in 2004. The company made luxury vehicles and mainstream vehicles and was owned for the most part of its existence by General Motors.

In its heyday, Oldsmobile earned a reputation for innovation. For instance, in 1930, the company introduced a four-speed semi-automatic transmission called the “Automatic Safety Transmission;” in 1940, Oldsmobile was the first automaker to offer a fully automatic transmission, called the “Hydramatic;” and in 1962, the company introduced the first turbocharged engine in 1962 (the Turbo Jetfire).

Before the begininning of its terminal decline in the 1990s, Oldsmobile witnessed soaring sales in the 1970s and 1980s. Notable models included the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme; the Oldsmobile 88, a full-sized family coupe and sedan; the Oldsmobile 98, a full-sized luxury coupe and sedan; the Oldsmobile Toronado a personal luxury coupe; and the Oldsmobile Omega, a European flavored compact car.
