Kyungsung Precision Industry, which began operations in 1944, later became Kia Motors Corporation, the first Korean company to build motor vehicles. The name “Kia” connotes “rising from the East,” a combination of the Sino-Korean coinages, “ki,” meaning “come out of,” and “a,” denoting East Asia.

Kia Motors America began operations in 1992, and two years later introduced the first Kia-branded car, the Sephia. The Sportage joined the Sephia a few years after. In 1995, the company had expanded its dealerships to 30 states with sales in excess of 34,000 cars.

Led by car designers, Kearn and Shreyer, the company has since transformed Kia cars, giving them a recognizable face in the form of a distinctive corporate grille called the “Tiger Nose.” In 2016, the company was accorded top rank for model reliability in the United States by J.D. Power and Associates.

Kia is currently a leading manufacturer of cars, crossovers, minivans and SUVs, all of which are sold with a 10-year or 100,000-mile warranty offered on several components.
